Child Life Specialist

Child Life Specialists are child development experts. They promote effective coping through play, preparation, education and self-expression activities for children facing a broad range of challenging experiences—particularly those related to healthcare and hospitalization. Since a child's wellbeing depends on family support, Child Life Specialists provide information, emotional support and guidance to parents, siblings and other family members. They also play a vital role in educating caregivers, administrators and the general public about the needs of children under stress.

Some healthcare facilities have Recreational Therapists; others have dually certified Recreational Therapists/Child Life Specialists. Recreational Therapists assess and treat patients using interventions that restore, remediate or rehabilitate. They help improve the patient’s functioning and independence while reducing or eliminating the effects of illness or disability.
